The more you desire to get, the more you lose. Desires have no limits. So, even if the desires are satisfied temporarily, the satisfaction will eventually disappear, and you will have even bigger desires. In that way, actually, desires never be fulfilled eternally, and then sufferings last forever. Sufferings do not come from others, but from yourself. Gain is loss. It seems crazy that you bother losing intentionally. If so, you have only not to desire to get more. Rather, the best things to do is to lose. This is the secret of Zen.

When you are at the base of an extremely big mountain, you are not aware that the mountain is there. When you live on an enormously big island, you forget that you live on the island. Similarly, concerning a mighty strong person, no one can notice that he/she is strong. Concerning an infinitely compassionate person, no one can notice that he/she is compassionate. It is because truly strong and compassionate persons never display their strength and compassion, like mountains and islands. They exist there naturally like air. In that way, people of martial arts quietly serve for others.

Human beings unintentionally have too much desires, but it makes them work too hard and sometimes eventually lose their health. Early death due to it would seem really worthless. As if we unintentionally consume too much salt and sugar, we unintentionally seek too much wealth and fame too. As if too much salt and sugar make us sick, being caught up in too much wealth and fame eventually affects our health. People of Zen and the Tao are aware of this mechanism. Therefore, they do not get greedy. It is because greed leads to harm in the end. Accordingly, those who are on the true martial way never get greedy.

It is not that you intend to do something in a particular and forcible way, but that you are changing freely with the flow of where you are, and find yourself controlling the situation around you. This is the truth of genuine strength. If you push something forcibly, it naturally would react against you. However, if you do something with the flow, it would be done as if by itself. It is not that you simply keep your mind straight, while it is not also that you simply obey your opponent's mind. You are with the flow of another mind beyond both yourself and your opponent. That is Wu Wei Zi Ran like water.

The world is made up of Yin and Yang. If you get something forcibly, then you will make a loss; if you force someone to do, then you will trigger a protest. It would be appropriate that you modestly step backward, not step forward assertively, but rather have an attitude to wait. You should not twist the enemy down with your all strength in order to make him/her surrender by force, but wait for and harmonize with his/her power. It is not that "I" do something in the world, but that the world including "me" is done by itself. That naturally being, which is called "Un-i" by Dogen, is the Tao as well as Zen. There is harmony of "oneness" there.

Authentic masters of martial arts never look strong. They are not proud nor arrogant, but humble, unselfish, or considerate. Budo-ka, who are connected with the Tao in that way, may seem like just a fool from the viewpoint of people who are not connected with the Tao. Free from the social values and estimates, they practice their arts mindfully and entirely like a fool. Consequently, many people may ridicule them as a fool. Then, authentic Zen practitioners and the Tao cultivators might be considered as a fool from a social point of view. But, whether they are masters or not is clear for wise people.

For example, there are a lot of scriptures, cultivating methods, and meditations in various kinds of Buddhism. But, as one of Buddhists' ways to be as they are, ultimately, practitioners of Buddhism come to just sitting. They just sit there. In the same way, there are also a lot of Katas in various schools of karate, ultimately, practitioners of Naha-te come to Sanchin, while those of Shuri-te come to Naifanchi. They entirely practice only Sanchin and Naifanchi. Then, the more these martial artists practice, the weaker and softer they become. Therefore, martial artists who are truly strong have nothing to do with conflicts.

There are Yin and Yang; night and day; left and right; short and long; low and high; down and up; women an men; weak and strong; soft and hard. If there is not one of the two, there will not be the other of them. Both of them get together to be "oneness," so both are indispensable. "I" exist since "other(s)" exists. If I respect "me" only and disrespect "other(s)," some kind of conflicts will happen to them. Smoothly harmonize with and mindfully accept even hostile "other(s)." Doing so will minimize the size of conflicts. Do not think of "me" as special. "I" is just one side of "oneness."

The best is doing everything artlessly; Wu Wei. You should not do anything intentionally, nor show it off intentionally. Love to be just as you are in harmony with nature. Do what you should do mindfully as much as you can, but never force yourself to work harder. Additionally, never force others to work, too. Then you will relax your shoulders and become soft. If you become soft, others around you become soft too. It eventually will decrease conflicts around you. This is an effect of the Tao. This is "Mutekatsu-ryu," which is the way to win without conflicts.

If you intend to do anything in a forced way, then, contrary to your intention, you will not be able to achieve it. It is because that is artificiality (gou-i). Differently, unless you intend to do anything in a forced way, it will turn out well. That is artlessness (un-i). If you intend to get some benefit, you contrarily will not be able to do so. If you intend to get some praise from others, you contrarily will not be able to do so. If you intend to get control of your enemies, you contrarily will not be able to do so. We can do no better than hide our strength. We had better intend to not show it to others. If there are people who are eager to win, then allow them to do so. If there are people who are eager to act big, then allow them to do so. If there are people who are eager to do as they like, then allow them to do so. Such people, though, would have a swollen head, and eventually dig their own grave. That is why truly strong persons never show off their strength.

Gorgeousness or luxuriousness, ornateness or showiness attract our attention, but there are no truths in them. Nature is simple and plain. Though human beings are apt to be attached to their appearance and appeal to others intelligibly, there is no naturalness in such acts. Existing in a natural way seems like a gemstone that will appear after unnecessary ornaments are all eliminated. The more you cultivate martialness, the more you go back to nature. There is the truth there. People who are near the truth will be voluntarily followed by others. That is why Budo-ka, who cultivate Zen and the Tao, are followed by others.

Budo-ka, as people of Zen, are in harmony with the Tao. The Tao sages do not show off their achievements. Rather than showing off, they never purposely express their own achievements by themselves, even if it is unclear for those around them whose achievements these are. Showing off and expressing oneself is based on the thoughts of "self." The source of every lust is "self." Being free from this "self" is the way of being in accordance with Zen. In that way, people who make achievements truly without "self" can be said to be truly great ones. Individuals of Zen and the Tao are ones of selflessness.

Beating others requires some amount of efforts, and the win yielded by the efforts brings some level of joy. But the win and joy are superficial and unessential. An individual who is truly strong knows that there are numerous lusts in himself/herself, and then affirms the existing self of him/her. Lusts generate sufferings. Therefore, we had better depart from all our lusts, and devote all our energy to what we should do now. In addition, we can joyfully appreciate being here now. Existing in such a way is exactly Zen, and also in accordance with the Tao. Budo is a way so that we will exist in that manner.

All of evaluations like honor and fame are made by human beings. Primarily, such things do not exist naturally. But, we human beings decide on whether a person is good or bad by using various social measures created by ourselves. We do so in spite of the fact that primarily there is nothing at all. Therefore, if a person  was Budo-ka who cultivate the Tao or Zen, he/she would not follow something artificial or "na" which means something labelled, but artless nature. He/she would not be caught up in "na," but be just in harmony with heaven and earth. It is because Budo-ka understand that "na" generates lusts, which in turn engender sufferings.

Martial arts are combat skills. Then, martial artists are barehanded, but it can be said as if they carried arms with them. That is why Budo-ka who follow Zen and the Tao would avoid clashes or conflicts, and keep doing their best not to use the arms. Rather, they would hide their having arms from other people's eyes as much as possible. On the other hand, people who display their combat abilities looks like stupid ones who walk on the street in the daylight with showing off a sword or gun. If they were not Samurai nor police officers, their behaviors would be nothing but evil.

People of the Tao are not proud of their results. People of Zen are not caught up in their results. It is not people of the Tao or Zen who are caught up in winning or losing, desire to win, and are proud of the winning. Therefore, if a person thinks of himself/herself as a real Budo-ka, it never happens that he/she shows off his/her strength when he/she wins a game of martial arts. It happens in sports that people feel delighted with winning and bad about losing. Budo, which is a practice of the Tao or Zen, is a path to transcend the value judgment of winning or losing. Individuals who are caught up in and proud of their results are nothing more than that.

It is a matter of course that we have a goal and diligently work toward it day-to-day. But, if we intended to achieve the goal forcibly, we could never get it. Primarily, we must not admire ourselves as a person who deserves to get it. We must not overestimate nor exaggerate about ourselves. We must just keep exerting ourselves inartificially, modestly, and humbly. Being mindful inartifically and naturally in such a way would eventually let the goal be actualized of itself. Budo-ka, who are the Tao and Zen cultivators, keep working everyday in such a way.

In our human world, there are strength and weakness, and gain and loss. Based on the fact, it is people of the Tao who keep being weak or losing consciously. Originally, the measures of strength-weakness and gain-loss are relative values that human beings create. The Tao cultivators become aware of the relativity of strength-weakness and gain-loss, and naturally and mindfully accept all of them without preconceptions. They do not seek for strength and gain, nor worry about weakness and loss. A Japanese Zen monk said "Enlightenment is to lose, while illusion is to gain." Budo-ka who cultivate Zen, therefore, are weak and losing.

People of the Tao are not wasteful. They never move wastefully, speak wastefully, nor think wastefully. Budo-ka also never do so. If you moved wastefully, you could not efficiently control your enemy. If you spoke wastefully, your words would cause unnecessary conflicts. If you thought wastefully, you would come to have hesitation and inattention. Put off waste and be simple. In addition to it, discard value judgments. Apparently bad things have a part that we can learn or benefit from. Therefore, actually there is nothing wasteful. It is people of the Tao, people of Zen, or Budo-ka who deal with things as they are in such a way.

Calmness or tranquility is the way of being Budo-ka. Martial artists observe their own breath and body through the practice. Such cultivated concentration and observation skills can eventually become calm and tranquil mind. This is mindfulness. Martial artists who cultivate mindfulness are described as Budo-ka. Budo-ka never easily get agitated. They always gently keep attentive observation on all directions. Genuinely strong persons are rooted immovably, being there in peace.

The world depends on the Tao. The Tao means the nature itself, and then the heaven, the earth, and the people all depend on the nature. It is people of the Tao, or people of Zen who try to be aware of this fact and be as they are. Budo-ka would try to be not against the nature and be as they are in terms of both physical and mental skills. If we were forcibly against anything, we would lose rather than win. Therefore, we should aim at not losing as well as not winning. We, as ordinary people, always can't help trying to win. Budo-ka would depends on the great nature beyond winning or losing.

Glossing or exaggerating oneself is against the Tao. Such things are all redundant. Attaching one's mind to the appraisals from others or boasting one's own superiority and victory is against the Tao. Such things are all wasteful. Concerning martial arts too, the practitioners would necessarily become interested in glossing themselves and attaching their mind to the appraisals from others if their arts became sports. That is against the Tao. Martial arts, which is aimed at controlling enemies by the least time and strength, is essentially plain and simple. Therefore, genuine Budo-ka, who are artists understanding Zen, never be proud of their toughness.

As strong wind as well as rainstorm eventually will be gone, nature is always changing. It is entirely beyond the control of human beings. If everything follows the Tao in such a way, nothing will go well when you attempt to do something by force or change something as you want. Rather, it is better that you should observe the situation as it is, ride on the flow, and keep just being there with no resistance. The stronger some of martial artists become, the weaker they become. It is those persons that are Budo-ka, who are with Zen or the Tao. They are not showy, intrusive, self-assertive, arrogant, nor haughty. But they are not servile nor masochistic. They are just there unintentionally and naturally.

Schools of martial arts are determined by their katas. Kata is a form that is visible to everyone. Schools pass their techniques down to future generations by katas. But, if the practitioners preserved only the form of their school's katas, it would not be different from the records on picture, writing, photograph, or video. If they did not preserve the essence of their school that underlies their katas, it would be worthless. In order to feel the essence through the practice of katas, there is no way but keeping observation of the internal somatic sensations with mindful attitudes. Famous masters of each school are persons who became aware of, touched, and followed the essence.

Eating luxurious foods, dressing up with something expensive, obtaining a lot, communicating with everyone brightly and sociably, working quickly, and being highly evaluated by others; these are all good in our human society. But, the opposites are not necessarily bad. Rather, the more you do not seek for material things, pay attention to others, nor put much value on appraisals, the more sufferings will be reduced. It is important to be free from anything in a mindful way, and be with the Tao just as you are. Budo-ka is trying to reach the state through the practice of martial arts.

It is the best that we follow the Tao unintentionally (wu wei) and naturally (zi ran). Following the Tao means trying to let go of desires thoroughly. Fully throwing them out would leave a pure self. We have troubles precisely because we have desires, and then, we would be free from troubles if we abandoned desires. We are often thinking too much, bound by the sense of justice, and fond of scheming, and the reason for all of them is that we are quite concerned about the interests of our "selves." Therefore, cultivating the Tao is similar to cultivating mindfulness which lets us try to be free from the social measures of evaluation supporting our selfishness. Budo-ka, who practice mindfulness, are the Tao cultivators.

If you follow the Tao, you would not need to take the trouble to do something. People who do not follow the Tao would have to do something. If you were mindful, you would not need to go out of your way to do something special since you are glued to nothing. If you were mindless, you would intend to make it since you are swayed by something. Martial arts are the skills for attaining a purpose by only doing such things as necessary, with no trouble and no waste, simply and naturally. Budo-ka is a person who cultivates mindfulness through martial arts that follow the Tao in this way.

If you were a Budo-ka, you should not seek for fame or flaunt your achievements. If we intend to measure ourselves in social evaluations, desires will naturally arise. It is mindfulness that is emerging from and transcending the world where we are slaves of values, evaluations, and desires. That is also following the Tao. Becoming a free and natural existence not bound by evaluations and achievements is where Budo-ka is aiming at. If you were just present like air in such a way, those around you could live in peace, and work at ease.

The practice of martial arts is to obtain rest through motion. Rest means empty mind, which is the Tao or Zen. Martial artists grasp and control their enemies and situation with the quiet observation skills which are physical application of martial arts, while they understand and cope with their selves and world with the same quiet observation skills which are mental application of martial arts. Rest within motion is just this thing, which is being mindful. It also is being in the most natural state, which is going with the flow of the heaven and earth. Those who keep feeling and cultivating rest through martial arts is just called Budo-ka.

People of the Tao are careful and cautious, whereas soft and calm. People of mindfulness also observe sensitively, whereas vaguely take a whole view in a tranquil manner. The heart of martial arts is having a careful and sensitive consciousness (i.e., an observing skill) and a soft and tranquil attitude (i.e., a coping skill). Masters of martial arts are squaring off, while they are not. They have an eye on the best chance to move quickly and accurately. They do not move wastefully, fancily, and unnaturally. Therefore, Budo-ka imperceptibly accomplish their tasks in an elastic and smooth, unresistant and natural way.

Normally, any martial art has its katas. Kata is a guide or clue to show the direction for learning the art, that is, a bible or a sutra. It is the traditional practice of martial arts in Asia that the practitioners consider, interpret, and examine the meanings of katas which have been handed down since ancient times. But, they should not be caught up in the visible forms just as they are. It seems like the metaphor "finger pointing at the moon" in Buddhism, kata is a pointing finger or a sutra, and it is the thing pointed by the finger that they really should look at. That is the martial core essences of the school (ryuha), and ultimately, the dharma or the Tao.

It is Budo that is a training system for transcending all human appraisals and values. "Budo" should be used as the name for mindful meditation through martial arts, and then, being mindful means the state that we do not make any judgement of value. Therefore, it can be said that Budoka is a person who cultivate the true self that is apart from appraisals and values, or the self that is just in here now. That is a person of the "Do," just the "Tao." People of the Tao stay away from appraisals by and values in their society. True Budoka is, therefore, unwavering.

We feel inclined to absorb anything good. The inclination seemingly appears to be fine, but it also leads to confusion if we absorb even good things in an unlimited and excessive manner. Being plain and simple is in harmony with the world in a rich and balanced way. So too with martial arts. We are apt to have a greed to master good arts, good techniques, and good katas more and more. However, we can reach a deeper, higher, or farther place by mindfully cultivating a single art, technique, or kata in a simple way than learning this, that, and the other things.

It is not only for self-defense that martial arts are worthy of being martial arts. Rather, that is a seemingly understandable external use of martial arts, not the essential purpose of practicing the martial. That is one of the effects of martial arts since they are physical arts, and that point of view is narrow and conventional. The essence is not on the external shape, but in the internal contents. The essence inhabiting the activity of martial arts is, specifically, the feature of meditation through observing the breath and body, and also the feature of cultivation of mindful life through the meditation. It is not until the internal essence is actively used that the martial arts become "Budo."

Martial power is the power to physically control and overwhelm other people. When we practice martial arts having this power, one wrong step will make us coercive, dominant, and violent to others. Thus, it is a real martial person that can practice and behave sensibly. Then, he/she would finally acquire the delicate and profound power. Real martial persons are gentle and soft. The more we practice, the gentler and softer we become. Being sensitive, that is, being mindful is the way that we can become a person of the Tao who has a deep power.

Too much is bad in everything. We human beings have developed this higher-leveled civilization, precisely because we are animals who ruminate about the past and worry about the future. But, ruminating and worrying too much is bad. That becomes the source of stress. Though we have a deeply rooted disposition to love delicious food, dressing up, applause, and reword, loving them too much is bad. Desires are the source of sufferings. Even if it is a practice of martial arts, doing too much is bad. The important thing is to know these human beings' automatism, and after that, to make a choice among several alternatives intentionally. That is mindful freedom.

Water is a symbol of the philosophy of Taoists, and an essence of not only Zen but also martial arts. Practitioners of Zen and martial arts, with freedom, move and live in a soft and elastic way, like water. That is a life style of Budo-ka, who are people of Zen. While they develop the force and techniques to control others in their every practice, they never fight with them. The reason why they can live in such a manner is that they have an ability to observe their self-existence as Budo-ka in a mindful way. They are like water, changing their form freely according to the circumstances, giving energy to the world and lives. That is Budo-ka.

They are not attached to winning by fighting. Originally, they do not fight with others. Such individuals are the real Budo-ka. They have an air of calmness, largeness, and deepness like heaven and earth. Not fighting with others means not being self-centered, that is, letting go of the attachment to the self. In such a way, being mindfully away from values and appraisals leads to peace of mind. Peace of mind naturally leads to peace of body, too. Learning fighting arts is making mind and body peaceful. Therefore, the real Budo-ka are peaceful, broad, and profound like heaven and earth.

The reason why martial arts are "arts" is that the arts yield a maximum benefit by a minimum cost. For example, it can be said that the artists control their opponents with maximum efficiency of the energy flow in their whole body harmonizing with the breath. In order for it to be realized, it is necessary to eliminate all waste. So to speak, it is to be free from attachments. It is letting themselves go with the heaven and the earth, and sticking to nothing. If they entirely let go of all of the attachments, they would get eternal strength and abundance. It is martial arts that is aimed at this. Mindful life is also the same.

Once you pile a training of developing awareness of the breath and body through the practice of martial arts, it will bring you mindfulness. Mindful state is being free from any judgement of value, or being not caught up in any interest and speculation. In that way, regularly concentrate on the things that you should do here now in a patient and soft way. In the course of time, unexpectedly, that would bring you something rich. If you do so, you would apparently seem like a fool or a simpleton, but a real martial artist, that is a person of Zen, is such a person.
