After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 37 老子:第三七章を読んで

あえて何かを為そうとすれば,かえって為しえない。それは作為(強為)だからである。そうではなく,むしろ何かを為そうとしなければ,結果的に為されている。それが無為(云為)である。得をしようとすれば,かえって得できない。褒められようとすれば,かえって褒められない。敵を制しようとすれば,かえって制せない。先を見ず,つまり,結果を期待せず,今やるべきことをマインドフルにただやる。そうすれば,結果は自ずとついてくる。

If you intend to do anything in a forced way, then, contrary to your intention, you will not be able to achieve it. It is because that is artificiality (gou-i). Differently, unless you intend to do anything in a forced way, it will turn out well. That is artlessness (un-i). If you intend to get some benefit, you contrarily will not be able to do so. If you intend to get some praise from others, you contrarily will not be able to do so. If you intend to get control of your enemies, you contrarily will not be able to do so. You should not look ahead nor hope for a good result, but do mindfully just what you should do at present. Then, results will follow you accordingly.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 36 老子:第三六章を読んで

強さは隠しておくに越したことはない。あえて人に見せない方が良い。勝ちたい人がいれば,その人に勝ちを譲れば良い。威張りたい人がいればその人に威張らせておけば良い。意のままにしたい人がいれば,その人に意のままにさせれば良い。しかしそういう人は,増長して,やがて自滅する。だから本当に強い人は,その強さを自ら示すことはない。「柔よく剛を制す」とは,本来そういうことである。そうして武道家は,道を極めるほど,弱くなっていく。

We can do no better than hide our strength. We had better intend to not show it to others. If there are people who are eager to win, then allow them to do so. If there are people who are eager to act big, then allow them to do so. If there are people who are eager to do as they like, then allow them to do so. Such people, though, would have a swollen head, and eventually dig their own grave. That is why truly strong persons never show off their strength. This is the primary meaning of "softness overcomes hardness." Then, the more Budo-ka master the way, the weaker they become.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 35 老子:第三五章を読んで

煌びやかさや豪勢さ,華美さや派手さは目を引くが,そこに真実はない。自然はシンプルであり,質素である。人間はつい見た目にこだわり,分かりやすいアピールをしがちだが,そこに本当の自然さはない。自然にあるということは,余計な装飾を削り取っていったところに残る原石のようなものである。武を極めるほどに,自然へと帰っていく。そこに真理がある。真理に近い人には自ずと人がついてくる。禅とタオを練る武道家には,だから人がついてくる。

Gorgeousness or luxuriousness, ornateness or showiness attract our attention, but there are no truths in them. Nature is simple and plain. Though human beings are apt to be attached to their appearance and appeal to others intelligibly, there is no naturalness in such acts. Existing in a natural way seems like a gemstone that will appear after unnecessary ornaments are all eliminated. The more you cultivate martialness, the more you go back to nature. There is the truth there. People who are near the truth will be voluntarily followed by others. That is why Budo-ka, who cultivate Zen and the Tao, are followed by others.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 34 老子:第三四章を読んで

禅者である武道家は,タオと通じている。タオの賢人は,功績を自慢しない。自慢しないどころか,たとえそれが誰の功績なのか分からなくても,わざわざ自分から申し出ることもしない。自慢したり申し出たりするのは,「私」という思いに基づいている。あらゆる欲の元は「私」である。この「私」に囚われないことが禅の在り方である。そうして真に「私」から離れて功績を為す人は,真に偉大な人といえる。禅とタオの人とは,つまり無私の人である。

Budo-ka, as people of Zen, are in harmony with the Tao. The Tao sages do not show off their achievements. Rather than showing off, they never purposely express their own achievements by themselves, even if it is unclear for those around them whose achievements these are. Showing off and expressing oneself is based on the thoughts of "self." The source of every lust is "self." Being free from this "self" is the way of being in accordance with Zen. In that way, people who make achievements truly without "self" can be said to be truly great ones. Individuals of Zen and the Tao are ones of selflessness.
