After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 33 老子：第三三章を読んで

他人に勝つにはそれなりに努力が必要であり，その結果として勝てばそれなりに嬉しい。しかしその勝利とその喜びは表層的であり，本質的ではない。真に強い人は，自分の中にある無数の欲を知り，その上で今ある自分を肯定する。欲は苦をもたらす。だから欲から離れて，今すべきことに全力を尽くす。そうして今ここにあることをありがたく喜ぶ。その在り方はまさに禅であり，また，タオとも通じている。武道とは，そのように在ろうとする道である。

Beating others requires some amount of efforts, and the win yielded by the efforts brings some level of joy. But the win and joy are superficial and unessential. An individual who is truly strong knows that there are numerous lusts in himself/herself, and then affirms the existing self of him/her. Lusts generate sufferings. Therefore, we had better depart from all our lusts, and devote all our energy to what we should do now. In addition, we can joyfully appreciate being here now. Existing in such a way is exactly Zen, and also in accordance with the Tao. Budo is a way so that we will exist in that manner.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 32 老子：第三二章を読んで

名誉や名声といった評価はすべて，人間が作り出したしたものである。もともとそんなものは自然にあるわけではない。しかし人間は自分たちの作り出した社会的なモノサシで，人の良し悪しを決める。元を辿れば何もないのに。だからタオや禅を練る武道家であれば，ラベルづけされた作り物（名）に従うのではなく，素朴な自然に従う。名にこだわらず，ただ天地と調和する。それは，名が欲を生み，翻ってそれが苦を生むことを知っているからである。

All of evaluations like honor and fame are made by human beings. Primarily, such things do not exist naturally. But, we human beings decide on whether a person is good or bad by using various social measures created by ourselves. We do so in spite of the fact that primarily there is nothing at all. Therefore, if a person  was Budo-ka who cultivate the Tao or Zen, he/she would not follow something artificial or "na" which means something labelled, but artless nature. He/she would not be caught up in "na," but be just in harmony with heaven and earth. It is because Budo-ka understand that "na" generates lusts, which in turn engender sufferings.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 31 老子：第三一章を読んで

武術は戦技である。したがって武術家は，素手であるけれども，その身体に武器を有していると言える。だから，禅やタオに従う武道家であれば，衝突や葛藤を避け，極力その武器を用いないようにする。さらには，武器を有することを他者になるべく知られぬよう隠しておく。一方で，自ら武を誇示する輩は，まるで日中に街頭で刀や拳銃を振りかざしながら歩く痴れ者のようである。武家や警察官でないのなら，それは害悪以外の何物でもない。

Martial arts are combat skills. Then, martial artists are barehanded, but it can be said as if they carried arms with them. That is why Budo-ka who follow Zen and the Tao would avoid clashes or conflicts, and keep doing their best not to use the arms. Rather, they would hide their having arms from other people's eyes as much as possible. On the other hand, people who display their combat abilities looks like stupid ones who walk on the street in the daylight with showing off a sword or gun. If they were not Samurai nor police officers, their behaviors would be nothing but evil.
