禅者である武道家は，タオと通じている。タオの賢人は，功績を自慢しない。自慢しないどころか，たとえそれが誰の功績なのか分からなくても，わざわざ自分から申し出ることもしない。自慢したり申し出たりするのは，「私」という思いに基づいている。あらゆる欲の元は「私」である。この「私」に囚われないことが禅の在り方である。そうして真に「私」から離れて功績を為す人は，真に偉大な人といえる。禅とタオの人とは，つまり無私の人である。
Budo-ka, as people of Zen, are in harmony with the Tao. The Tao sages do not show off their achievements. Rather than showing off, they never purposely express their own achievements by themselves, even if it is unclear for those around them whose achievements these are. Showing off and expressing oneself is based on the thoughts of "self." The source of every lust is "self." Being free from this "self" is the way of being in accordance with Zen. In that way, people who make achievements truly without "self" can be said to be truly great ones. Individuals of Zen and the Tao are ones of selflessness.
