華美に飾ろうとしたり，大げさに表現しようとしたりするのは，タオに反する。それらはすべて余計である。他者からの評価にこだわったり，優秀さや勝利を誇ったりするのは，タオに反する。それらはすべて無駄である。武術もまた，競技化するとどうしても華美になり評価にこだわるようになる。これはタオに反する。最小限の時間と力で敵を制しようという武術は本来，地味で素朴である。そして禅を知る術者である本当の武道家は，強さを誇ることもない。
Glossing or exaggerating oneself is against the Tao. Such things are all redundant. Attaching one's mind to the appraisals from others or boasting one's own superiority and victory is against the Tao. Such things are all wasteful. Concerning martial arts too, the practitioners would necessarily become interested in glossing themselves and attaching their mind to the appraisals from others if their arts became sports. That is against the Tao. Martial arts, which is aimed at controlling enemies by the least time and strength, is essentially plain and simple. Therefore, genuine Budo-ka, who are artists understanding Zen, never be proud of their toughness.
