武術の流派はその形によって規定される。形は誰の目にも見える形象である。形によって流派は技を後世に伝承する。しかしその形象のみを伝承しているのであれば，それは絵や文字や写真や映像による記録と変わらない。その奥底にある流派の精髄を伝承しなければ意味はない。形の稽古の中でその精髄を感じ取るには，マインドフルな態度で内的な身体感覚を観察し続けるしかない。流派の名だたる先達は，その精髄に気づき，触れ，従ってきた人たちである。
Schools of martial arts are determined by their katas. Kata is a form that is visible to everyone. Schools pass their techniques down to future generations by katas. But, if the practitioners preserved only the form of their school's katas, it would not be different from the records on picture, writing, photograph, or video. If they did not preserve the essence of their school that underlies their katas, it would be worthless. In order to feel the essence through the practice of katas, there is no way but keeping observation of the internal somatic sensations with mindful attitudes. Famous masters of each school are persons who became aware of, touched, and followed the essence.
