人は，人生や活動に目的や目標を欲する。何のために生きているのか，何のためにやっているのか，といった疑問がときどき頭に浮かび，悩ませる。しかし，人生に目的も目標もない。人間はただひたすらに生きているだけである。禅や空手にも同様に，なんら目的も目標もない。ただひたすらにやっているだけである。目的や目標はすなわち欲そのものであるが，そうした目的や目標を持ちたいというのもまた欲である。
Human beings want to have purposes or goals in their life and activities. Questions of what we live for or what we do for sometimes come to our mind, and annoy us. But, life has no purpose and no goal. We humans are just living entirely. Zen or karate also has no purpose and no goal. We are just doing them entirely. Purposes and goals are desires themselves, and wanting to have those purposes and goals is also a desire.
