Kakidamishi and Competitions

It is said that there were chances for free fighting, called "kakidamishi" (kakedameshi), as a measure to know how high the skills were, or how well the skills work. This means that, basically the most important activity is daily practice, and something like competitions is sometimes taken place to know the results of the daily practice. But, current sports karate focuses on competitions, and they conduct their usual practice in order to win a match, that is, to demonstrate their own relative superiority against others. In a word, that is putting the cart before the horse. There is no getting away from this fact if karate is not regarded as budo, but sports. In other words, budo would become games, if they made much of competitions which are to decide on win and loss.
