Teaching Martial Arts to Others 武術を他者に教える

武術を教えるという作業は，決して容易ではない。もちろん，どのレベルの術を教授するかにもよるが，当然ながら，高いレベルの身体的な技術を他者に教え伝えるという行為は，極めて難しい。これに比べれば，単に師から術を学び，自身の身体操作を高めるために個人的に研究するだけの方が，数段簡単であると言えよう。なぜ他者に武術を教えるという行為は極めて難しいのか。それは，通常，自らの身体を研究すればするほど，一定の身体的な術を他者に伝えることに対して躊躇するようになるからである。ある時点である術を教えるということは，その時点でその術が正しいことが保証される必要がある。逆にいえば，何ら保証されないことを他者に伝えることは，無責任な行為だといえる。真に身体を研究する者は，ある術が本当に正しいと確信する域には決して達しない。つまり術の完成ということは原理的にありえない。だとすれば，武術は永遠に他者に教えることが不可能だということになる。したがって普通は，現段階で自分が達しているレベルの術を，あえて他者に教えようとは思わない。そこに，武術を他者に教えることの困難さが生まれる。ただ，現実的には，暫定的にこれが正しいだろうと思える最善の術を，師は弟子に伝える。しかし，その術は，師が研究を続ける者であれば，常に改訂される可能性を含む。この改訂を，恥じることなく弟子に提示できる師こそが，本物の武術家である。したがって，武術の師になれるかどうかは，おそらく，向き不向きがあって，師になれる者となれない者の間には大きな溝があると思われる。もちろん，自身は大した研究もしていないのに，他者に教えることだけには熱心な輩がときどきいるが，それは全くの論外である。

The work to teach martial arts is definitely not easy. Of course, though it depends on what levels of skills we teach, naturally, it is extremely difficult to teach others high levels of physical skills. Compared to this, it can be said that it is rather much easier to simply learn skills from masters and then study them personally for improving one's own physical manipulation. Why is it so much difficult to teach others martial arts? It is because, generally, the more we study our body and physical skills, the more we get to hesitate about teaching others some physical skills. In case that anyone teaches others a certain skill at a certain point of time, that skill must be guaranteed to be correct at that time. Conversely, we can say that it is an irresponsible conduct to teach others some skills that have no guarantees. A person who truly study the body will never attain the level that he/she is certain that a skill is really correct. In other words, it is impossible in principle that a certain skill or art can complete. If so, it would mean that martial arts are impossible to be taught others forever. Therefore, generally, we don't think that we dare to teach others such level of skills that we attain at the present stage. That gives rise to the difficulty in teaching others martial arts. Nevertheless, actually, masters teach their disciples the best arts that they think may be provisionally correct. But, the arts or skills always have a possibility to be revised, if the masters are those who continue to examine their arts or skills forever. It is a genuine martial artist that a master who presents those revisions to his/her disciples unabashedly is. Thus, whether a person can become a master of martial arts or not depends on his/her personality or character, and there seems to be a great gulf between those who can become a master and those who can not. Even though we sometimes see a person who is eager only to teach others in spite of the fact that he/she has not studied very well, that is out of question, of course.
