The Power of the Heel, or the Ground

Punching is made by the heel. Punching means an attack to an enemy by the arm, hand, and fist, so we unconsciously tend to strain that arm, hand, and fist. But, Punching in karate is made by the leg, rather than the arm. More specifically, it is made by both the abdominal and the lower back region, which are supported by the legs, which contact the ground. Accordingly, punching is made by the ground. Then, the important node relating the ground to the body is the heel, especially the one of the rear foot. Therefore, it can be said that punching is made by the heel of the rear foot. The secret for punching an enemy while we stand on the ground by the two legs is to punch him/her by the ground.

Back Side (Rear) Muscles

Mainly the back side muscles are used in karate. During fighting, karateka tense their lower part of the body. At this time, the muscles tensed are from the hips (gluteus maximus muscles) and the backside of thighs (biceps femoris muscles) to the inner thighs (adductor muscles). While the abdominal muscles are tensed, the lower parts of back muscles are tensed. When we block and punch with the arms, the upper parts of back muscles (latissimus dorsi muscles) are tensed. Especially the back side muscles of the underarms are used for blocking and punching, so if you tense the upper arms, the part of the back side ones, or triceps brachii muscles are tensed. In this way, it is considered to be characteristic to karate that the offence and defense are made by synchronizing the back side muscles throughout the whole body. "Considered" means that there is a possibility that the above theory may be similar to the one in all of the martial arts such as ju-jutsu and ken-jutsu.

Tradition

How can we pass down karate as a martial art to posterity? Or, as some help toward it, how can we spread karate in the present world? But, at first, why do we need to pass it down? It may be because we would regret exceedingly if this traditional culture, or the excellent physical culture originated in Okinawa disappeared from the world. But, if "I" died, "my" thought itself would be meaningless that the discontinuation of the tradition in the future is unfortunate. If so, it would be meaningless to pass down the martial art karate to posterity and spread it in the present. If "I" was absent from the world, there would be no sorrow, no regret anywhere in the world. Therefore, it will be entirely sufficient for "me," if "I" can feel happy by continuing to come touch with this traditional culture as well as acquire an experience of exemplifying it by using my own whole body. Neither more nor less. In other words, the purpose of budo is not to spread and pass down itself. Though there may be a thought that a traditional culture is important to be passed down to posterity as a heritage, budo is just a life and living of the practitioner himself/herself, and then it is not the most important task for him/her to preserve and pass down as a cultural object. In other words, budo is at first to polish "myself" through martial arts, so, spreading and passing down the art is a result yielded in the process of practicing it, or an accompanying by-product. To describe in an extreme manner, as repeatedly said, spreading and passing down is not important for "me." But, notwithstanding, what we think it is a little pity while we live is that karate as accepted in the present world is a one as a sport, never as a martial art. We think that the karate sportized (i.e., integrated or generalized) as a sport will continue to spread and develop in its own way. The fact itself is pleasing. Karate as a sport may be more required by men and women of all ages than one as a martial art, according to the need in this world. But, even if so, it may be our natural thought that we hope karate, which is "a martial art" as precious physical culture, will be passed down to posterity. What we know in the history of martial arts is that a lot of schools have disappeared. Once it disappeared, it could never revive. Isn't there another way but to depend on the times about whether it survive or not?

Standing

How to stand -- In karate, it is extremely important how we stand. Of course, not only karate but also comprehensively budo and martial arts may put emphasis on "standing". If there is a school or teacher who is not concerned about "standing" at all, you don't mind to regard them as a fake. We human being support our whole body by the only two small soles of the feet since we chose to walk upright. The square measure of the soles is extremely small. We human beings have to support the long height and heavy weight of our body by these two small points. We have to keep the balance of our body exquisitely, which is standing upright against the gravity, in order to neither fall forward nor land on our rear. Of course, most of us is not aware of it in everyday life. The human body, including the brain, smartly processes complex incoming information received from both such external environment as gravity, slope, and unevenness, and internal body sensations (somatic sensations, deep sensitivity), and enables us to naturally stand, sit, and walk without consciousness. This makes people in general to live throughout their daily life with no problems. However, the scenes premised by budo or martial arts are non-ordinary, and then it is the secret for budo-ka or martial artists how to "stand" in a non-ordinary way with keeping the balance of their body. In addition, essentially, budo-ka would not divide their everyday life in terms of the ordinary or non-ordinary. Therefore, budo-ka should always put gentle attentions on how to stand, walk, and sit. They should pay attentions sharply and aimlessly to the body here now.

Tension with Relaxing

The core principles of karate-oriented body are "tension", "breathing", and "center of balance". During attacking and blocking, we constantly maintain the balance of body as well as operate the tension of body and the breathing together closely. But, importantly, "tension" stated here does not mean maximum muscle hardening. It is fatal to harden our body at the extent that we can not move at all. Though we should tension our body with breathing (exhaling) momentarily at the time of the impacts of offense and defense, we need to continue to both tension and relax our body simultaneously, before and after the moments of punching, kicking, and blocking. Relaxing here is, however, not to relieve all power of our body thoroughly. We should maintain the mild tension of muscles continuously by paying equal attention to all over the body. It is important not to focus on one thing but pay even consciousness to both the inside of the body (self) and the environment (including enemies) as the outside of the self. Gradually, it is getting to enable the inside and outside not to be distinguished. If so, here-now as the whole would become a state mixed with tension and relaxing together. That is just a mode of mindfulness. But, it is easier said than done. It is an attraction for practitioners of not only karate or budo but also zazen, and simultaneously, a state that budo or zazen practitioners are eternally seeking for.
