空手競技の魅力の１つは，その武道性にある。若者にとっては，武道（としての）空手よりも，試合（勝敗）を目的としたスポーツ空手の方が分かりやすく，その方が取っかかり易いことは否めない。大学生レベルまではそれでも良い。ただ，せっかく様々なスポーツ，さらには様々な武道系スポーツからあえて空手を選択したのだから，単にスポーツとしての効用を求めるだけではなく，本来の武道としての意味や目的を知ることは有用である。そして，そのことを教えうるのは，指導者がどれだけ空手本来の武道性を理解し，自ら追求しているかにかかっている。
One of the attractions of karate is "budoism." Karate sports aiming at competitions (win and loss) is more understandable for young people, and there is no denying that they can more easily begin karate sports at first, rathar than karate as budo. It is good until they are at the level of university students. But, since they dare to select out karate among various sports, and even various martial artistic sports, it is significant to know the meaning or purpose of karate as real budo as well as to seek the effects of karate as sports. Then, whether it can be taught is dependent on how much the instructors or coaches themselves understand and pursue the budoism of real karate.
