After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 14

Normally, any martial art has its katas. Kata is a guide or clue to show the direction for learning the art, that is, a bible or a sutra. It is the traditional practice of martial arts in Asia that the practitioners consider, interpret, and examine the meanings of katas which have been handed down since ancient times. But, they should not be caught up in the visible forms just as they are. It seems like the metaphor "finger pointing at the moon" in Buddhism, kata is a pointing finger or a sutra, and it is the thing pointed by the finger that they really should look at. That is the martial core essences of the school (ryuha), and ultimately, the dharma or the Tao.

It is Budo that is a training system for transcending all human appraisals and values. "Budo" should be used as the name for mindful meditation through martial arts, and then, being mindful means the state that we do not make any judgement of value. Therefore, it can be said that Budoka is a person who cultivate the true self that is apart from appraisals and values, or the self that is just in here now. That is a person of the "Do," just the "Tao." People of the Tao stay away from appraisals by and values in their society. True Budoka is, therefore, unwavering.

We feel inclined to absorb anything good. The inclination seemingly appears to be fine, but it also leads to confusion if we absorb even good things in an unlimited and excessive manner. Being plain and simple is in harmony with the world in a rich and balanced way. So too with martial arts. We are apt to have a greed to master good arts, good techniques, and good katas more and more. However, we can reach a deeper, higher, or farther place by mindfully cultivating a single art, technique, or kata in a simple way than learning this, that, and the other things.

It is not only for self-defense that martial arts are worthy of being martial arts. Rather, that is a seemingly understandable external use of martial arts, not the essential purpose of practicing the martial. That is one of the effects of martial arts since they are physical arts, and that point of view is narrow and conventional. The essence is not on the external shape, but in the internal contents. The essence inhabiting the activity of martial arts is, specifically, the feature of meditation through observing the breath and body, and also the feature of cultivation of mindful life through the meditation. It is not until the internal essence is actively used that the martial arts become "Budo."

Martial power is the power to physically control and overwhelm other people. When we practice martial arts having this power, one wrong step will make us coercive, dominant, and violent to others. Thus, it is a real martial person that can practice and behave sensibly. Then, he/she would finally acquire the delicate and profound power. Real martial persons are gentle and soft. The more we practice, the gentler and softer we become. Being sensitive, that is, being mindful is the way that we can become a person of the Tao who has a deep power.
