After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 11

It is not only for self-defense that martial arts are worthy of being martial arts. Rather, that is a seemingly understandable external use of martial arts, not the essential purpose of practicing the martial. That is one of the effects of martial arts since they are physical arts, and that point of view is narrow and conventional. The essence is not on the external shape, but in the internal contents. The essence inhabiting the activity of martial arts is, specifically, the feature of meditation through observing the breath and body, and also the feature of cultivation of mindful life through the meditation. It is not until the internal essence is actively used that the martial arts become "Budo."

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 10

Martial power is the power to physically control and overwhelm other people. When we practice martial arts having this power, one wrong step will make us coercive, dominant, and violent to others. Thus, it is a real martial person that can practice and behave sensibly. Then, he/she would finally acquire the delicate and profound power. Real martial persons are gentle and soft. The more we practice, the gentler and softer we become. Being sensitive, that is, being mindful is the way that we can become a person of the Tao who has a deep power.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 9

Too much is bad in everything. We human beings have developed this higher-leveled civilization, precisely because we are animals who ruminate about the past and worry about the future. But, ruminating and worrying too much is bad. That becomes the source of stress. Though we have a deeply rooted disposition to love delicious food, dressing up, applause, and reword, loving them too much is bad. Desires are the source of sufferings. Even if it is a practice of martial arts, doing too much is bad. The important thing is to know these human beings' automatism, and after that, to make a choice among several alternatives intentionally. That is mindful freedom.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 8

Water is a symbol of the philosophy of Taoists, and an essence of not only Zen but also martial arts. Practitioners of Zen and martial arts, with freedom, move and live in a soft and elastic way, like water. That is a life style of Budo-ka, who are people of Zen. While they develop the force and techniques to control others in their every practice, they never fight with them. The reason why they can live in such a manner is that they have an ability to observe their self-existence as Budo-ka in a mindful way. They are like water, changing their form freely according to the circumstances, giving energy to the world and lives. That is Budo-ka.

After Reading Lao Tsu: Chapter 7

They are not attached to winning by fighting. Originally, they do not fight with others. Such individuals are the real Budo-ka. They have an air of calmness, largeness, and deepness like heaven and earth. Not fighting with others means not being self-centered, that is, letting go of the attachment to the self. In such a way, being mindfully away from values and appraisals leads to peace of mind. Peace of mind naturally leads to peace of body, too. Learning fighting arts is making mind and body peaceful. Therefore, the real Budo-ka are peaceful, broad, and profound like heaven and earth.
