Wuwei Wushi Living

In the lessons of Taoism, wuwei means not interfering with oneself and others, while wushi means not getting involved in the things of the world. That is doing everything moderately, without excess and lack, keeping harmony. That is living with no resistance to the flow, effortlessly, unselfishly, softly, gently, and flexibly.

Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art that exactly embodies this lesson as it is. In other words, Tai Chi Chuan is an art for physically practicing Taoism or Taoists' way to live. That is not only a martial art, but also a method of meditation. Practitioners of Tai Chi, with the relaxed mind and body, move and control an imaginary enemy flowingly. They do not be too tensed nor too loosened, and go with the flow softly in a quiet though firm state. The work flowing with a concentration to the body in such a way is itself meditation.

All of martial arts essentially should be like this. The secret of martial arts is in here. When the practice of martial arts becomes meditation, marital arts becomes Budo. Therefore, Budo-ka aim to live their lives in a wuwei and wushi manner through martial arts. They live in such a way that they let everything around them to be as it is, without interfering and getting involved by it, but having the center and axis of their own.

This is just living with the Tao, and also living in the Zen way. The way to live with letting go of and being free from anything fascinating us is the way the Tao and Zen cultivators live. It is also living in a meditative way by practicing martial arts that embody the Tao and Zen. That is the way of living of Budo-ka.

Mindful Interpersonal Relationship

We human beings are social animals. The word "Social" I said here means living with other people. No one can live by himself / herself. Of course, in the psychological sense, it is possible that each of us lives alone. On the other hand, it might be possible that we would live by ourselves if we were in an ultimate situation like Mr. Onoda the sublieutenant of World War II. But, when we live an ordinary everyday life, we human beings have a fate that we have to live with other human beings.

Living with others can make us have a variety of emotions in our daily life. They includes not only happiness and joy,but also grief and misery. Most of these various kinds of emotion are evoked in the relationships with others. That is to say, most of the causes of emotions are other individuals. We human beings feel joy and anger in the social interchanges with others.

Of course, there is a case that only what we do by ourselves gives us or deprives us of something without apparent presence of others. In this case, it seems to be done only by ourselves, but it isn't. Most of our acts are primarily based on blind evaluations by others, or supported by the values shared with others. These evaluations and values are internalized within our consciousness. Based on these internalized evaluations and values, we become happy or sad for what we do by ourselves.

In this way, we are always with other people, and have a various kinds of emotion there. If so, having mindful relationship with everyday emotions will lead to mindful interpersonal relationship. Observing a variety of emotions evoked inside ourselves in a mindful way makes relationships with others richer. That means, we highly feel pleasure, are not influenced by anger, deeply have sadness, and taste joy with our own body.

But in any kinds of emotion, we experience the emotion itself though we must not stick to the emotion. The point is to observe while experiencing it. It is only to feel the emotion vividly just as it is. If we in that way did not stick to the emotion, the possibility would decrease that we break relationships with others unnecessarily. Budo-ka that is really a man of budo often make generous relationships with people. That is a mindful interpersonal relationship developed by his/her long history of the budo practice.

Living in a mindful way means living with awareness. Budo-ka cultivate awareness by martial arts, and perceive their whole life with that cultivated awareness. Therefore, living in a budo-ka's manner, as a matter of course, becomes living in a mindful manner.

All of the "do"s, whose names are "XX-do" in Japan, can be said to induce us to cultivate awareness. The activity that aims to develop awareness by that "XX" is "XX-do." On the other hand, the aim of qi gong or yoga is also to polish awareness. In both "XX-do" and gi gong or yoga, we brush up awareness through the moving body.

Between the time of getting up in the morning and the time of going to bed at night, budo-ka aim to spend a day with mindful awareness. We are not always consciousness even when we are awake. Even when we wake up physiologically with the eyes opened, we often work unconsciously and automatically. It is as if we were asleep while awake. Or, it is as if we were automatically working (walking) zombies or robots.

No other thing is more wasteful than living without consciousness. No other thing is more fruitless than living in such an unconscious and automatic way as the mind is absent. Living a conscious and controlled life with the mind here and now is a mindful life. Approaches to develop such awareness is not only "do," but also qi gong or yoga.

We should make time in a day to do "do," or practice qi gong or yoga. We should find special time to concentrate and develop awareness. We should regard that time as a routine in a day and embed it in your life. We should do the practice everyday as a natural event, which looks as if we take a bath everyday, as if we brush our teeth everyday, or as if we eat everyday. Then, the sense of awareness developed in the special time of concentration should be extended to all the time of life, that is, between the time of getting up in the morning and the time of going to bed at night. That is the mindful life.

Living in a Budo-ka's Manner

Budo-ka are people who devote themselves to living in zen-like or mindful manner. In order for them to be like that, they try to cultivate mindfulness everyday through martial arts, and apply it for becoming mindful at everything in their daily life. If a person is a kado-ka, a practitioner of Japanese flower arrangement, he/she would aim to develop mindfulness everyday by using ka (flowers) and be mindful in everyday life. If he/she is a shodo-ka, a practitioner of Japanese calligraphy, he/she would use sho (challigraphy) to develop mindfulness. If a sado-ka, a practitioner of Japanese tea ceremony, he/she would use sa (tea). All "do"s (ways, roads) lead to zen as well as mindfulness.

Therefore, "something-do-ka" means people who want to be mindful with that "something." It is consequently said that, for example, under the category of the arts called budo,  kyudo-ka use kyu, kendo-ka use ken, judo-ka use ju (yawara), and karate-ka use karate, for cultivating mindfulness.

But, how many practitioners of martial arts are there that have understood this? Though they themselves practice kyu-jutsu (jutsu in Japanese means "arts" or "techniques"), ken-jutsu, ju-jutsu, and karate-jutsu, can it be said that they practice kyu-do. ken-do, ju-do, and karate-do? If they did not understand the meaning of "do," what is really "do" for them? How do they distinguish between "jutsu" and "do"? Is the distinction unnecessary for them?

Of course, there is no choice between an interest in "jutsu" and "do." It is natural that some people train "bujutsu (martial arts)," while other people cultivate "budo." But if they call themselves "budo-ka," they should think over the meaning of "do" and the meaning that they are not "bujutsu-ka" but "budo-ka" and then name themselves "budo-ka." They should ask themselves which one they are. And then, it is clear that they should take care not to easily call themselves "budo-ka," if they really did not understand and polish "do."

But, practically, in terms of the meaning of the words, both can not be used clearly in distinction from each other. There is an academic society named Nihon Budo Gakkai (Japanese Society of Budo), and even this society has not decided the definition of "Budo" yet. It is even though "budo" is the society's name. But, such things are of common occurrence. Similarly, as for other constructs or organizations, we often can see unclear usages of the definitions.

Budo is zen. And then, the practice of budo means practicing martial arts as the way for approaching zen. Budo-ka are those who apply the practice to their life and always live their life in a zen manner while they are awake. Strictly, zen is not mindfulness. But, for easy understanding, it will be justified to consider zen as mindfulness. Budo-ka are those who devote themselves to living in a zen or mindful way.

Mindful Martial Artist

Budo-ka means mindful martial artists. Or, it means marital artists that know mindful living. If a person was at least a martial artist, he or she would aim at the art of martialness, devote his or her time to practicing it, and cultivate his or her body. But, if he or she was aiming to cultivate his or her skills "only,"  he or she would be a martial artist. Not a budo-ka.

Budo-ka have a perspective of zen over martial arts. They half-unintentionally have an intention to get to the state of zen. No. Strictly speaking, practicing martial arts oriented toward the place of zen has already been in zen, already Buddha. It means being mindful. But, wanting consciously to be mindful should not become a purpose of the practice.

It is at least raising the skills of martial arts that the budo-ka's basic intention to practice is. Their purpose of practicing martial arts is not "for" reaching the state of zen, or attaining mindfulness. So, the practice of both martial artists and budo-ka have the same form and contents. But, the difference between budo-ka and martial artists is that budo-ka see zen over their art. They have their sights set on approaching the psychological state of mindfulness. They consider reaching there as their ultimate purpose with range. However, they should not intend to or aim at it directly. That is where "do" gets its name "do" from.

There is a possibility that, while a person as a martial artist is aiming at cultivating the martial art and expressing the art by the body, he or she can unintentionally reach at zen or kuu (emptiness), arrive at the state of mindfulness, or touch the tao. In other words, there is a chance that he or she suddenly "find" martial arts to be a superior approach for reaching kuu or tao. But, such change in the way of realizing the art as this could hardly happen to us ordinary people. It might be such a flash that practitioners equal to masters like Musashi Miyamoto or Munenori Yagyu will be inspired with during their practicing process.

Therefore, these kinds of books of martial arts such old masters wrote and left are precious. It is important for us ordinary people to eye the world over the art by tasting even the least parts of the ultimate state or the secret of the art written in them.

Zen is simple but deep. It is absolutely impossible for us ordinary people to understand what zen really is, or to reach the state of zen. But, just when we have an attitude to have our sight on there and practice for reaching there, such state as we have the attitude is already zen. Dogen, the founder of Japan Soto school of Buddhism, said that just when you sit, you become Buddha. This applies to martial arts too. You practice martial arts in a mindful way, without any attention to becoming mindful, in order to become mindful through the practice of martial arts. That is just zen, or Buddha.
